At the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York earlier this month over 100 countries committed to support a goal to protect at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030.

The 30 by 30 ocean target wants to eliminate fishing and undersea mining in 30% of the global ocean. This will enable fish to safely regenerate their numbers which in turn will prevent overfishing. It will also “halt and reverse biodiversity loss, and enhance climate change resilience, which in turn should deliver positive outcomes for all people” as Masha Kalinina writes for the PEW Trusts.

Her article lists the countries that have now signed this initiative and committed to this goal. Over 100 countries — but not the United States or China, which egregiously overfish the oceans and are driving many species toward extinction.

We may not be able to do much to make China change its ways, but we can raise our voices and take action to help the United States reclaim a mantle of moral and ethical integrity in a world of nations by signing this initiative and taking strong action to support this admirable, essential, 30 by 30 goal.
